Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus. They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all the churches of the Gentiles are grateful to them. (Romans 16:3-4, NIV)
The 2015 production of Tales from the Tour is now complete, having been held on Monday night at Scottsdale Bible Church here near Phoenix. The evening was packed with laughter, inspiration, information and joy. Jeff Allen, Steve Jones, Ben Crane, Aaron Baddeley, and Blayne Barber were all wonderful. In short it was a blast, as you know if you were able to attend.
This was my first year to be the chairman of the event, a job I gladly accepted even while silently employing my standard Greer’s Optimistic Question: How hard can it be?
Yeah, I know. But in addition to being “harder than you think,” it is almost always more joy than you think.
A big reason for that is that we get to do this together. Ben Crane said this extremely well in his comments at the event. When asked to name the best thing he has learned in his 13 years as a PGA Tour player, he said it is the word with. He went on to elaborate that he does what he does with others, not alone. That includes not only his immediate family, but even other players.
I occasionally hear people speak about Paul as if he did all of his work by himself. Of course he didn’t, because none of us do. At the end of his letter to Rome he didn’t just want Priscilla and Aquila greeted, as in today’s verse; he named a total of 28 people in Rome. And he referred to others without using their names! Clearly Paul was not alone in his work, just as Ben Crane is not alone in his and I am not alone in mine.
Of course Paul’s work, like mine for Links Players or Tales from the Tour, is far more than even the collective effort of a group of people. Without God’s guidance and inspiration and encouragement and direct involvement, all of that work would have been clouds without rain.
What about your work? Do you attempt to undertake it by yourself? I hope not. God may have called you to some great task, like he did Moses, or to some ground-breaking work, as he did Paul, or even to a golf ministry, like he did me. He may have called you to be the event coordinator at a church, like he did Tanna, or the technical director, like he did Nick. Or he may have called you to be one of the janitors. Whatever your role, I am certain that he has called others to stand with you, to support you with their gifts, or even to risk their lives for you.
Whether he has called you to lead or assist, you are with others, and God is with you. You are not alone.
