Then I heard the Lord asking, ‘Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?’ I said, ‘Here I am. Send me.’ (Isaiah 6:8)
I just returned from a trip to St. Andrews, Scotland, the home of golf, with seven other guys from Greenville, South Carolina. Walking those historic fairways was unforgettable, but what impacted me most wasn’t the history of golf—it was the history of the gospel.
Most golfers know Old Tom Morris and his influence on the game. Yet St. Andrews is also remembered for men and women who refused to deny Christ. Some were burned at the stake for their faith.
One man, 80 years old, was executed simply because he owned a Bible in his own language. Their love for Christ was greater than their love for their own life.
As I reflected on those stories, I realized my love for golf is about much more than golf. God has given me this game not merely for recreation or competition, but as an opportunity to be His arrow, sent into the lives of others for the sake of His Kingdom.
“Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth.” — Psalm 127:4
An arrow fulfills its purpose only when it is placed in the hands of the archer, drawn back, aimed, and released. That is a picture of the Christian life.
Before Christ, we were dead in our sin, burdened by guilt and shame we could never remove. But in His grace, Jesus took our place on the cross, bearing the judgment we deserved. He clothed us in His righteousness, and three days later He rose from the grave—seen by more than 500 witnesses—proving His victory over sin, death, hell, and the grave.
God’s grace not only saves us—it sends us.
The same Savior who redeemed us, now places us in His sovereign hands as arrows to be launched into a world that desperately needs hope. For Links Players International, that mission field is the world of golf.
Every tee time is a divine appointment. Every playing partner is someone made in the image of God. Every round is an opportunity to display the love, integrity, humility, and hope of Christ. Every friendship has the potential to become an eternal conversation.
Arrows don’t choose their target—they trust the Archer.
God knows exactly why He places us in a particular foursome, club, tournament, or community. Sometimes He sends us to encourage a believer.
Or maybe to serve someone who is hurting. Sometimes to patiently build a friendship that opens the door to the gospel. Our responsibility is not to control the outcome, but simply to remain available in the hands of the Master Archer.
The martyrs of St. Andrews remind us that Christ is worthy of everything. While most of us will never face their sacrifice, we are called to the same surrender.
Would you pray today:
“Lord, place me wherever You desire. Aim me wherever You choose. Use my life for Your glory. Make me an arrow that points people to Jesus.”
Our mission is not ultimately to lower our handicap. Our mission is to be a disciple of Jesus and make disciples.
May every swing, every conversation, and every relationship become another opportunity for the Master Archer to advance His Kingdom.
Prayer: Father, thank You for saving us through the finished work of Jesus Christ. Place us in Your hands as Your arrows. Open our eyes to the people You have placed around us through the game of golf and give us the courage and love to point them to Jesus. May we be remembered not for how well we played, but for how faithfully we represented Christ. Amen.
