“And Jesus said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.’” (Mark 16:15, ESV)
Tim and Sandra were paired with Larry and Beth in the Thursday Night Couples League.
On the par-3 3rd hole, Beth hit her tee shot long and deep into the underbrush that normally isn’t very accommodating to a wayward golf ball. The group found her ball against a pinecone and amid some wiry grass.
To make any attempt at a swing, she would have to crouch under a tree limb. Beth was determined and not interested in taking an unplayable lie. In she went, wedge in hand.
Larry shook his head as she crunched down, taking abbreviated, unorthodox practice swings. Tim and Sandra were cheering her on. As Beth swung, crackling echoed as the club made its way through the thicket.
Miraculously, she made contact with the ball, and it found daylight. As it tumbled out, hopping through the greenside rough, it popped onto the green and gently rolled to six inches from the hole. An unbelievable golf shot—truly remarkable. A shot you “hit and hope,” and Beth pulled it off.
As Beth exited the “jungle,” she was greeted with high fives and hugs. Amid the celebration, Tim proclaimed, “That is one of the best Momma Shots I’ve ever seen!”
As you can imagine, the question from the group was, “Wait. What? What’s a Momma Shot?” Tim said, “That’s when you hit such an incredible golf shot you have to call your momma to tell her about it.” Everyone burst into laughter, and on they went to hole 4.
How many Momma Shots have you hit in your golfing career—so good you had to tell someone about it?
If you are a follower of Christ, something far more incredible happened to you when you professed faith in Jesus Christ. He revealed to you (Acts 26:18; Ephesians 1:18), by His Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:3), that He is holy and you are a sinner (Romans 3:23).
Your sin deserved death (Romans 6:23), it separated you from God, and there was nothing you could do on your own to make it right. He also revealed to you that He sent His one and only Son (see John 3) to pay your sin debt (see Romans 5:8–11), a debt you could not pay.
Lastly—and most likely through the influence of someone speaking truth into your life—He showed you that His salvation is a gift and can be received by faith through confession and repentance of your sin (Romans 10:9–10).
Truly, it was an indescribable, eternity-altering moment in your life when Jesus saved you. All God’s doing. For you!
If a golf shot can make you call your momma, what should being brought from spiritual death to spiritual life cause you to do? Who should you call to tell what God has done for you? With whom should you share this good news?
“And Jesus said to them, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.’”
He is sending us with the gospel message (John 20:21), and your family member, or golfing partner, or club pro, or neighbor needs to hear it from you. May we be found faithful.
Prayer: Father, grant to me boldness to speak your Word to those I know who need your salvation. Amen
