Hurry Up and Wait

May 20, 2026

…while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. (Titus 2:13).

We hurry to wait for many things. We hurry to beat afternoon traffic, only to come to a standstill on the interstate. We hurry to the airport to catch a connecting flight, only to wait at the gate—and then wait again in the jetway behind the guy trying to jam his overstuffed carry-on into the overhead bin.

We hurry to the golf course, only to wait for the group ahead to clear the green. You get your distance to the flag, pull the right club, and you’re ready to send it—but the group ahead is still on the green.

So you stand there, club in hand, watching and waiting.

You want to take the shot. But because you have good golf etiquette—and good sense—you know it isn’t time.

So you wait… and wait… and wait.

Maybe you begin to feel anxious. Maybe you begin to second-guess the shot. Maybe you even think about laying up.

It struck me how much of the Christian life feels like that moment—ready, eager, wanting to move, but called to wait.  We see the brokenness of this world—hate, evil, death, disease, war, pain, suffering—and we begin to wonder: When will Jesus come and make things right?

And so, we wait.

Scripture reminds us that we are people who live with anticipation—not just for the next step in life, but for the return of Jesus Himself:

“…while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.” — Titus 2:13

Just like waiting for the green to clear, we don’t always know how long the wait will be. It can feel uncertain. Sometimes we’re even tempted to act early—to take matters into our own hands, but we wait.

But Jesus made a promise:

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me…” — John 14:3

Our waiting isn’t empty—it’s anchored in certainty.

God’s timing is never off:  “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you…” — 2 Peter 3:9

What feels like a delay is actually His mercy. What feels like waiting is actually preparation. So what do we do while we wait? We stay ready.

“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” — Matthew 25:13“You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” — Luke 12:40

Like a golfer staying loose, focused, and prepared for the next shot, we live alert—faithful in the small things, trusting in the big picture. Because one day, the waiting will be over.

And when Jesus returns, it won’t be a moment too early—or too late. It will be perfect. But only for those who have put their hope and faith in the finished work of Jesus on the cross.  I hope you are ready and waiting with me.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where are you being asked to wait on God right now?
  • Are you trusting His timing, or feeling tempted to “take the shot” early?
  • How does the promise of Jesus’ return shape the way you live today?

Prayer: Lord, help me trust You in the waiting. When I’m tempted to move ahead of Your timing, remind me that You are faithful. Keep my heart ready and my eyes fixed on the promise that You are coming again. Amen.
