And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our crimes, but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.(Luke 23:41-42, NASB)

What in the world is the definition of a holy head butt? It is a moment when you are convicted, shaken, and moved by an incident, a word, or simply experiencing an event that changes your life and biblical worldview with absolute truth.

I recently received this note from a reader regarding a Links Players’ devotional. It exhibits all the traits of a moment of change: “Just hit me right between the eyes. I am what most people would deem successful, but I still stress and worry. I must remind myself that it is all his, and I should be concerned about storing treasures in Heaven. I have lived too long in Laodicea. I am 62, and I see good friends pass away or go through some tough medical issues, and it reminds me to relax and enjoy the moment. And be happy with my 10 index.”

I can relate. There are other things to care about than how far I hit my 4-hybrid or how many putts I miss.

The Bible is full of examples of holy head butts that changed the direction of people’s lives. Do you think that holy head butt for the thief on the cross changed his life for eternity? It has probably changed eternity for many others since, as well.

  • Saul blinded on the Damascus Road (Acts 9:3-6).
  • Peter hears the cock crow for the third time (Matthew 26:74-75).
  • Moses observed the burning bush that was not consumed (Exodus 3:1-4).
  • The angel confronts Joseph concerning the pregnancy of his fiancée Mary (Matthew 1:18-25).

I received a holy head butt right before I became a Christian. It wasn’t as spectacular as a blinding vision on the road to Damascus, but nine words were spoken to me in compassion and truth.

Thirty-six years ago, I attended a Christian marriage conference with my wife. The conference speakers, the music, and the discussions spoke volumes to me. I knew I was missing something, but I was too proud to admit it. During the break-out sessions, the ministry leader asked how I liked the conference. He sensed what was going on with me. I said, “I have loved the speakers, the humor and real-life stories, and the inspiring music. It has been great.”

He looked right into my face and heart, paused for a moment, and said these nine words: “So, what are you going to do about it?” Three months later, I asked Jesus to come into my life and save me, and He did. I did not know I was lost until I was found.

I hope you have had similar experiences. God sends many holy head butts our way; I hope we all wear the helmet of paying attention.

It made an eternity of difference to the thief on the cross and can for you and me.

Prayer – Lord, I will look for You today in unsuspecting ways. I constantly need redirection.
