I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. (Matthew 12:36-37, ESV)

A common question in golf is, “What is the difference between average players, scratch players, and tour players? One answer that I’ve heard, and happen to agree with, is that when tour players get out of position, they get the ball back into position more quickly than regular players.

They don’t compound the error by trying to play a recovery shot that they are ill-equipped to pull off. They play to their strengths and don’t play careless shots. One definition of careless is “not giving sufficient attention or thought to avoiding harm or errors.”

I’m as guilty of this as anyone on the golf course, and I often hit careless shots that have consequences I don’t enjoy. I keep working on this part of my game, and I have to admit that I am getting better. Whether it’s through practice or just getting older and wiser from experience, I’m not entirely sure.

Once again, the parallels of golf and life come into play. How often do we choose our words carelessly and not give them sufficient attention or thought to avoid harm?

Words can encourage people or discourage them. They can either move people to action or cause them to become apathetic and unhelpful. Once again, I am as guilty of this as anyone, and I’m trying to get better at taming my tongue.

In today’s text, these are words that Jesus spoke. That is very convicting when you read this verse and think about how you talk to others. One exercise that I often practice and recommend when reading Scripture is to focus on Jesus’ words. Of course, all Scripture is God’s word, but sometimes it helps me to listen to his heart.

The things I am constantly reminded of when thinking about how Jesus spoke are: he was definitive, compassionate, loving yet stern at times, and mission-driven.

When you focus on His words, you will gain a new appreciation for the fact that Jesus came for a reason, and he never wavered from what he was here to do. What a great example for all of us.

In our efforts to become more like Jesus, I encourage you today to read, specifically focusing on Jesus’ teachings, and let them guide how you speak to and treat people. Remember, we’ll be held accountable for every careless word we say.

Prayer: Lord, teach us today through the words spoken by your son that we might choose our words carefully as we seek to serve you and your people. Amen.
