When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
When was the last time a storm or some other occurrence caused your electricity to be out for an extended period? For those of our Links Fellowships in the Southeast, the annual hurricane season usually provides this challenge for many of us.
The experience of having no power results in darkness, cold water, and, depending on the climate, a loss of heat or A/C. It can be challenging, inconvenient, and sometimes fatal, especially for those relying on power for medical devices.
Perhaps you’ve heard a Tour Pro discuss a round that started off in the wrong direction—no tempo, bad balance, blocked shots resulting in putts lipping out, bad bounces, buried lies, and shots from unfilled divots. Things looked like a dark, ugly end was in sight to their round. Then something clicked. Something changed (the lights came on) that turned things around.
It’s nice to get back in the groove when a round goes south. Perhaps it was something that brought a simple thought or eliminated too much traffic in the mind. We can all agree it’s much better to experience life in the light than feeling like you’re in a deep, dark room and running into walls.
For those of us who have endured a power outage for hours or days, the feeling of relief when the lights suddenly come back on brings a sense of peace, appreciation, and gratitude.
Twenty-seven times in the Bible, there are references about who and what is the light! We see our current world-locally and nationally-and even in our closest circles, the result of humans living in darkness. It breaks our hearts to see such evil acts done to so many, including innocent children.
The problem is many people in the world are living in darkness and aren’t seeing the light, whose name is Jesus.
The apostle John teaches us: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
Take a moment to look up the following references about light and then pray for those in darkness to be rescued from the darkness: John 9:5, Psalm 18:28, Isaiah 60.1, Micah 7:8, 1 John 1:5, Revelation 21:23, Psalm 27:1, Job 24:16, John 1:5, John 3: 19-21, 1 John 1:7, Isaiah 9:2, John 12:35-36, 44-46. 2 Corinthians 4:6.
Remember, darkness flees from light. As followers of Jesus, we must walk in His light and reflect His love and grace to others.
Prayer: Jesus, thank you for being the Light of the World and bringing me out of the darkness. Help us to reflect your light and love to everyone we meet.
