Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. (Hebrews 7:23-25, NIV)
When we grow up in the church, sometimes it’s easy to assume things. Certain words, phrases, and concepts that are foreign to some are second nature others. We can, at times, be speaking a different language to a new believer!
Even the most basic tenets of our faith require careful explanation.
LPGA founder Shirley Spork recently died at the age of 94. Her death came as a surprise to those who had seen her only weeks before at the Chevron Championship near her desert home in Rancho Mirage, California. It was during Chevron week that Spork received word that she’d be going into the LPGA Hall of Fame. Her legacy in the game was, at long last, getting its due.
When someone dies, no matter the age or the timing, it brings about natural questions. What am I here for? What will be my legacy? Is my place in heaven secure?
That last question is often answered like this in conversation, even among Christians: “I really hope the good Lord lets me in,” or “I hope I’ve done enough.”

Those who have a relationship with Christ should not question their place in eternity.

This response is our cue!
We must ready ourselves for these teaching moments.
Take your friend or loved one to Hebrews 7:23-25, and read the message sent to the Jews about how Jesus, who is with the Father, intercedes on our behalf. No sin is too great to be wiped clean. No amount of good deeds is enough to tip the scale toward heaven. Christ’s death sealed it.
In 1 John 2:1-2, the apostle describes Jesus as an advocate for us. “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” (NIV)
Those who have a relationship with Christ should not question their place in eternity. It shouldn’t be something Christians wrestle with or fear. Heaven is secure for those who know Christ.
PRAYER: Father God, we thank you for your word—for the assurance it gives us that heaven is our eternal home. Help us to point others toward that same peace.
