And he said, “Please do not leave us, for you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you will serve as eyes for us. And if you do go with us, whatever good the LORD will do to us, the same will we do to you.” (Numbers 10:31-32, ESV)
The words above were not spoken by Bubba Watson to his caddie Ted Scott or by Webb Simpson to Paul Tesori, but they might have been. In fact, I’m certain that many professional golfers, both men and women, have expressed the same sentiment to a caddie.
OK, the part about “where we should camp in the wilderness” may not be exactly what most pros are looking for, but an experienced tour caddie working with a rookie player might be able to recommend where to stay.
Once on the golf course, a good caddie can recommend where to hit the ball and will wisely steer his or her player away from trouble spots. A good caddie also watches the ball, pays attention to the wind (watching the trees, perhaps), and often helps read putts. “You will serve as eyes for us” is an important part of being a caddie.
Then of course there is that “whatever good the Lord will do to us, the same we will do to you” part. In other words, the more we make, the more you make.
If you want to live your best life for the Lord, follow the guide that God has already provided.Moses was negotiating with Hobab, his brother-in-law, to help guide the nation of Israel through the wilderness. Hobab had played the course and knew the layout, and Moses knew they needed him. Hobab turned him down at first, but the plea above did the trick.
If you want to play your best golf, especially on a course you’ve never played, hire a caddie. And if you want to live your best life for the Lord, follow the guide that God has already provided. How about this for a recommendation, which comes directly from Jesus in John 16:13: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.”
Imagine a caddie who would never steer you wrong, one who would read every putt exactly right for your putting stroke, one who calculated the wind perfectly and had every yardage to the half-yard. Imagine a caddie who always knew just where you were in the standings, and what you needed to do to get back on track. Imagine a caddie who did all that and still stuck with you even when you hit a bad shot.
Now imagine that this ultimate caddie works for free. All you have to do is ask, then listen, then follow and be guided into all the truth.
Stop wandering. Hire that caddie.
