Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal. (Isaiah 26:4, NIV)

There are lots of theories about how to best play golf. There are as many ideas as there are people who play. Who is right? What is the basic goal of the game? It really boils down to the fact that the person who wins the match is the one who gets the ball in the hole with the least number of strokes. It doesn’t matter if you hit your drive with your putter or chip with your driver. If you accomplish the task with the least number of strokes, you win. That’s the bedrock truth of golf.

Jesus is the bedrock truth of our faith. What are the basic truths about life we all need answers for? Let’s start with, “Why am I here? What should I be doing? What can I hope for in the future?” Many incomplete theories about life try to answer those questions. The fact is those answers cannot be found within us. We cannot think our way back to our origin or truly know what the best path for our life should be. We have no witnesses to what happens to us after death and it seems impossible to escape it.

Human theories about life seem to change with every generation. The answers to life are clear and accessible to anyone who will trust in the person of Jesus. What we do have are the words spoken by Jesus 2,000 years ago and the story of humanity related to us through the Bible. Human theories about life seem to change with every generation. The answers to life are clear and accessible to anyone who will trust in the person of Jesus. Jesus came once to the earth and did what was necessary to redeem all who would trust in him. He spoke words that are as true today as they were two millennia ago.

Most “enlightened” people find it difficult to believe that we were created by God in his image and that our purpose in life was to function as individuals connected to him. But that is what he said during his brief time on earth. Jesus said to come to him and trust in him. Those words have stood the test of time. Man’s basic questions have not changed as the years have passed. Theories and ideas about life and its meaning are in a constant state of flux, but God’s words remain the same. Jesus is the Rock we can build our life upon. He is eternally the same and our relationship to him is built on the truth of who he is.

Life can be lived in all sorts of ways, but if we would live our best life, we will need to understand the basic purpose for our life—the real reason we are here. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Trust in him and you will know the why behind your existence. That truth will set you free.
