Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. (Deuteronomy 7:9, NIV)
The words are still ringing in my ears: “I’ve got this!”
We’ve written about them here before. They were a gift from Amy Bockerstette to Gary Woodland when the two were paired up for a special one-hole walk at the wild sixteenth hole during a practice round for the Waste Management Open in January.
With Down Syndrome, Amy faces some challenges in life, but she hardly noticed them that day. She kept telling Woodland and his playing partner Matt Kuchar that all those hooting fans “love me.” And love her is exactly what they did when she hit her tee shot in the bunker, came out with a nice escape, and rolled in her par putt. Each time she told herself and her tour-playing partners, “I got this.”
In mid-June, Woodland was needing those words himself. Clinging to a narrow lead on the back nine of the US Open at Pebble Beach, he kept reminding himself what Amy had taught him. He kept saying to himself, “You got this.”
He sure did. Gary Woodland is the 2019 US Open champion. And Amy Bockerstette is a champion of his.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve added these words to my game, too. It’s so encouraging, believe me!
If you haven’t noticed, life isn’t a game. People are playing for real. So is our enemy, Satan. In life, though, I need more than this. If you haven’t noticed, life isn’t a game. People are playing for real. So is our enemy, Satan. And we’re not going to win these battles if we think a few words of self-encouragement are going to get us through.
So for life, my words are these: “God’s got this.”
Today’s passage are Moses’ words to the people of Israel. And he’s telling them that God is God, God is faithful, and God keeps his promises. In other words, God’s got this.
Do you ever worry? Do you ever feel like you don’t know how things are going to turn out? Have you ever felt hopeless? It’s very normal to have feelings of doubt and discouragement. Some of our Links Players facing major health issues have been honest to share their fears and anxiety with me. This is just one example of when we need to tell ourselves that God’s got this.
I love the word of God, as it is full of promises to help us get through the fiery trials in our lives. If you read the Bible regularly, you will frequently be reminded of how faithful our God is from generation to generation. (Sometimes this even works in reverse, as when Amy taught Gary, or when my 7-year-old grandson Facetimed with me a few weeks ago to tell me he had given his heart to Jesus. That was music to my ears, a wonderful encouragement from our faithful God!)
Whatever your circumstances, rely on God. He knows what he’s doing. He’s got this!
