Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. (John 21:25, ESV)
If no one saw your hole-in-one, does it still count? Must there be a witness to confirm such a feat? Beyond golf, the tongue-in-cheek accusation is that if you don’t photograph what you ate for dinner, can we trust you ate at all?
We all know the truth here. Just because someone didn’t see your ace or know what you ate that day from photos, this doesn’t mean you didn’t get that hole-in-one or in fact skipped a meal. Even if we did capture every moment of our lives, it would be limited and finite, just like us.
There is only One who is limitless and infinite. If we find ourselves thinking we know all there is to know about God, we must repent, as we are not worshipping the God of the Bible but rather our own constructed god, one small enough to where we know everything about him. But the biblical God is far too big for us to fully grasp his glory and majesty. We see this in the Old Testament when God told Moses, “You cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live” (Exodus 33:18).
When was the last time you were amazed by GodIn the New Testament, we meet Jesus, who is God in human flesh. What a humbling act that the God of the universe would be born a baby and live to be a man! In the four Gospels, we get to see what Jesus did and said, as well as people’s responses to him.
The book of John is written by John, one of Jesus’ 12 disciples. He was known as “the disciple whom Jesus loved” and was in Jesus’ inner three with Peter and James. Needless to say, John knew Jesus on close personal level and ended the book with today’s verse by proclaiming the infinite nature of Jesus’ life. That is an incredible statement if I’ve ever read one!
Just a brief re-cap of a few highlights of what John had seen and documented: Jesus calling the disciples, turning water into wine, cleansing the temple, healing the sick, raising Lazarus from the dead, preaching and teaching with all wisdom and authority, feeding the 5,000, walking on water, escaping arrest, healing the blind man, claiming oneness with the Father, raising Lazarus, death by crucifixion, and praise be to God, resurrection! May we never dull to the amazing fullness of Christ’s work and the amazing work God continues to do today.
It leads me to ask, when was the last time you were amazed by God? I encourage you to take time each day to ask to see his glory and to know him more. I can’t think of a better way to spend our finite time than investing and knowing the one who is infinite.
