“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8, NASB)
We are all on a journey. From the time we believed in Jesus, our daily goal should have been to yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Everyone’s journey looks different. Everyone’s goals are different.
When I attended Moody Bible Institute in the mid ’80s, students going into missions knew they were headed somewhere overseas. Not me. I was staying in the USA.
So how was it that on December 1, 2018, I found myself on a 22-hour trip to Nairobi, Kenya? Tracy Hanson sent an email looking for a male and female to join her on an Athletes in Action golf mission to Kenya. After getting the details from Tracy and AIA staff member Eric Nelson, I started asking a few trusted friends whether I should go. All I needed was someone to tell me no and that it had nothing to do with my Links Players ministry in Texas. I couldn’t find a no. In fact, two friends offered to help with the trip expenses!
All I needed was someone to tell me no and that it had nothing to do with my Links Players ministry in Texas. I couldn’t find a no.Instead of a male and female, Tracy ended up with me and Josh Nelson. The three of us represented Links Players, working alongside Athletes in Action. At the end of our second day of golf, it became apparent that the Links Players model of Fellowships at golf courses was the next step in the Athletes in Action outreach. The seeds have been planted to form Links Fellowships at four Nairobi country clubs. As the week progressed, each day brought us blessings from our new Kenyan friends. As a people, Kenyans are very warm, friendly, and appreciative. They enjoyed the help they were receiving on their golf games, and the Christian golfers in attendance were encouraged that we were Christian golf pros coming to visit their country.
How do we know when the Holy Spirit is leading us? Maybe the next move in your life is something you dreamed up, not the Holy Spirit speaking to you. You can find the answer if you ask a few questions:
– First, ask God if this is within his will for your life.
– Second, ask trusted friends for their godly advice.
– Third, ask yourself how this fits into everything you have learned about your journey with Christ.
The answers will come; just be ready to pack your bags.
The prophet Hanani told King Asa of Judah: “The eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His” (2 Chronicles 16:9). I know now how this applies even when I am moving to and fro myself, going where the Spirit leads me.
