Imagine

September 12, 2018

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine…  (Ephesians 3:20a, NIV)

Does the name Seth Waugh ring a bell? Probably not. But if you watch the Ryder Cup at the end of this month, you are likely to hear his name several times.

No, Seth Waugh is not a captain’s pick for the US team or the European team. Instead, he was picked to become the new CEO of the PGA of America, the association that oversees the US side of the Ryder Cup matches.

The selection was a surprise. In fact, it was a surprise to Mr. Waugh himself, who was in the process of stepping down as a board member of the PGA when the call came.

From all I read and hear, he’s widely regarded as a great choice. The surprise is there because he’s not a golf professional; he’s a businessman and tech investor. But he was the CEO of Deutsche Bank Americas, and while in that role his company became the title sponsor of a PGA Tour FedEx Cup playoff tournament.

I could hijack Mr. Waugh’s statement and say that following Jesus has introduced me to more people, more adventures, more places, more relationships than I could have ever imagined, and I would be right. In a video he recorded for the 29,000 PGA professionals, Mr. Waugh didn’t talk about any of that. What he did say was that he loved spending time on the course and caddying for his son, and that he had met his wife on a driving range.

Then he said, “This game has introduced me to more people, more adventures, more places, more relationships than I could have ever imagined.”

That may be true for you, too, because I know it is true for me.

Sometimes I try to tell folks who don’t play golf just what they are missing. They tend to think about the difficulty of the game, the fact that it takes several hours to play a round, and maybe even the expense of the game.

“All of that has some truth in it,” I say, “but the joy and the beauty and the people you meet far outweigh all of the challenges.”

In that regard, golf is like being a follower of Jesus. Those who have not tried it often think that it’s too difficult, that it will require them to change something, and that there will be a price to pay, perhaps socially or even fiscally.

All of that has some truth in it, but talk about an adventure! I could hijack Mr. Waugh’s statement and say that following Jesus has introduced me to more people, more adventures, more places, more relationships than I could have ever imagined, and I would be right.

Add the wonder of playing golf to the wonder of being a new creation in Jesus, and you have a formula for a rich and rewarding life.

More than you could have ever imagined.
