Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6, NIV)
In the golf technology world, a lot happens in eight years. I have not had any desire to keep up with it all since I stopped competing, until recently. I did replace my irons when the USGA changed the groove regulations a number of years ago, but the rest of my clubs are now ancient.
How can Jesus be the only way to salvation? How can he be the only truth? As I start competing again on the Legends Tour, I know I need to upgrade the tools of my trade. Feeling overwhelmed with where to start, I decided to head to Cool Clubs in Phoenix where I could test an endless number of brands and shafts to find the best fit for my swing.
I need to confess, however, that I was actually a bit skeptical about the whole process. This makes no sense because I was raised with custom fit clubs. I believe it’s important for every golfer to be fitted properly to play better golf. And yet, here I was staring at a confirmation email from Cool Clubs stating the day, time, and who would be helping me over the two-day process. The skeptic inside me said, “Why am I wasting my time and money? This person isn’t going to know what they are doing. They won’t have the answers I’m looking for.” While my skepticism was unwarranted, it felt very real to me.
As I worked with Sue over six hours, I was amazed at the data that populated the computer screen. Her knowledge, experience, and joy helped put to rest my skepticism and judgmental attitude. I found what I was looking for: a unique set of heads and shafts that I now believe will lead to better days of golf ahead.
When it comes to Jesus, skepticism runs rampant—just as it did more than 2000 years ago. How can Jesus be the only way to salvation? How can he be the only truth? How can he be the only life? Seriously?
Trackman is the machine that calculated the thousands of pieces of data about each club that I tested. Tangible numbers on a screen are easy to trust. The Bible, which holds all that we need to know in order to know and trust Jesus, tells us that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. There is only one unique path to salvation.
My skepticism didn’t vanish when Sue introduced herself to me, but as the hours clicked by, it quieted down and I found myself enjoying the experience of reciprocity with Sue. The journey for you and me is to rest in the invitation of who Jesus says he is. He is the one and only way to eternal life—a life we get to experience now and forever.
